BOSTON (September 18, 2020)—Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation is the first major exhibition to chart Jean-Michel Basquiat ’s relationship to early hip-hop culture. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) became the galvanizing, iconic frontrunner of this transformational and insurgent movement in contemporary American art, which resulted in an unprecedented fusion of creative energies that defied longstanding racial divisions.

The Museum of Fine Arts’ (MFA) newest exhibition “Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation” is an installation of firsts. Originally scheduled to debut in April of 2020, “Writing the Future” was just beginning to be installed the night the MFA was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
